Review:

Hybrid's third album sees the group return to the form of their classic Wide Angle album, after the disappointing follow-up Morning Sci-Fi.

Within the first few minutes you're into Hybrid's trademark sound of big orchestral strings, dirty basslines and blistering breakbeats. You also hear the male vocals which are present on a number of tracks including Dogstar and Until Tomorrow. However, although the vocals are OK they just don't fit the style of Hybrid's tracks as well as Julee Cruise's vocals did on the group's first album.

This third album is thankfully lighter and more positive than the rather depressing Morning Sci-Fi. The album makes its first big impression with the funky beats and strings of instrumental title track I Choose Noise. Falling Down follows and is more trance-y with female vocals, and recalls Way Out West, but it isn't particularly memorable.

Last Man Standing is one of the highlights of the album: a big, mean instrumental track that belongs in a film like Black Hawk Down. It's the director of that film's brother (Tony Scott), however, that gets sampled for the spooky Dream Stalker later on. In fact, there's a definite film soundtrack feel to a lot of the album.

The album ends on a high, with Just For Today being most like the group's classic Finished Symphony track. There's not enough of guest vocalist Kirsty Hawkshaw, but it's still a strong track and the highlight of the album.

Hybrid's third album puts the group back on the right track again, and their fantastic production skills are still evident. The beats aren't quite as experimental perhaps, and the tracks are less memorable than those on Wide Angle, but due to Hybrid's unique and ambitious sound, I Choose Noise is well worth listening to.
